· He was authorized as a “brevet second lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Infantry, which was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, near St. Louis.”
· Grant got married to Julia Dent in August 1848. The couple had 4 children.
· Grant was sent away a lot and he was away from his family, so in 1854 “he resigned from the military.
· Grant occasionally helped his father he hated the work and swore to his father that once he was an adult, he would never do it again.
· Ulysses was a small, sensitive, quiet youth. Most of the children in his school called him “useless” and used to make fun of him.
· Ulysses parents couldn’t afford a college education for him, so his father secretly signed him up for the Military Academy at West Point, after he got accepted his father, Jesse told him. When he initially told Ulysses he did not want to go, but because his father kept encouraging him he decided that he would take the opportunity and go.
· He did not want to go to West Point because he was an excellent horse trainer (he was a farm boy).
· The Mexican- American war was the place where Grant was able to prove his skill to others, as he was one of the men who received the Honors of Bravery. This was the first time he met Robert E. Lee.
