· On their round-the-world trip the Grants met many prominent people, such as: Queen Victoria, the emperor of Japan, and Otto von Bismarck; prime minister of Germany. After this many Americans were impressed by the Grants.

· Grant invested all of his equity in his sons partnership business; Grant and Ward, his son Buck persuaded him to invest $100,000 into his new company. Ferdinand Ward was involved in a scam, and lost all of the company’s money. Ulysses had to live off of the kindness of his friends to stay adrift.
